Gesu Closure Policy in the Event of Dangerous Weather Conditions
Marquette University occasionally decides to close the university in the event of dangerous weather conditions, typically in the winter months. When that happens, Gesu Parish will determine whether to also close. If Marquette closes, the Gesu Parish office may close, and events and meetings scheduled to be held at Gesu may be cancelled. The final decision on whether to close will depend on the circumstances of the Marquette closure.
Additional note on Sunday obligation:
We are blessed to have priests who live within easy walking distance to the church, so the cancellation of Mass and confessions will be done only in extreme circumstances.
Because of the Sunday and/or weekend Mass obligation, Gesu will try to remain open on weekends. But if conditions prove too dangerous, Gesu will cancel activities, meetings and events. Notification of the parish's closure will be communicated via local media outlets.
The decision to close is in the interest of the safety of all involved - parishioners, visitors, priests, parish staff, and Marquette personnel who assist with opening and closing the Gesu facilities.
Please note: One should never seriously risk one's life to attend Mass. If the weather makes it impossible or dangerous to travel to Mass, you can watch Gesu's live stream here.Canon law of the Catholic Church (Canon 1247) states that on Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. However, the Church does not expect the impossible, nor does the law require fulfillment of the obligation when doing so would be burdensome or dangerous.There is no obligation to attend Mass if weather and/or road conditions are unsafe or make travel dangerous or difficult, including situations in which individuals are unable to safely exit their driveway or parked space.If a weather-related emergency is declared by state or local authorities, travel may be restricted or prohibited. In such circumstances, traveling for Mass would be unsafe and imprudent, placing one’s own life and the lives of others at risk, including those working to clear roadways for future safe travel. In these situations, the obligation to attend Mass is not in force.Those who are unable to attend Mass in person are encouraged to view a televised or livestreamed Mass, if available, and to dedicate time to personal or family prayer in order to sanctify the Lord’s Day.Please pray for all those affected by storms, especially first responders, utility workers, and those who are vulnerable.
