Because of the generous gift to Gesu from E. Joe and Della Henke, in 1986 Gesu was able to install an elevator in the west tower. Before then we had a historic, beautiful, and prayerful Upper Church which was not accessible to some parishioners and visitors because of the great number of stairs. Now we have handicap access to the Lower Church, the Upper Church, and even the choir loft.
The new sound system includes a T-coil hearing loop that brings clear sounds
from a microphone directly into a person’s ears. The amazing wireless sound is not degraded by distance, reverberation, or background noise.
Ramps have been added behind the communion rail to make the sanctuary accessible for those with mobility issues. In the past, there were numerous instances when a visiting priest, speaker or eulogist was unable to access the sanctuary due to mobility issues. These ramps will help facilitate sanctuary access for many people. It also serves as a statement of inclusivity, letting people know that all are welcome at Gesu.
